Paul Syme’s Paintings
Paul Syme’s Paintings
2012
My artistic aim is two fold. In form, I explore the economy of stroke while remaining authentic to the form and the expressive qualities of the subject.
In content, I investigate 'play'. Specifically, with this series I use roller derby as my subject. I am a dad of two young girls so I take the importance of play seriously. When they’re adults, I hope they continue to play to grow and to cherish the joy of living. Roller derby is a sport owned by women. It is dynamic and powerful, full of drama and intensity. Their poses recall classical narratives and paintings.
